How to Read a Certificate of Analysis

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) records the identity of a tested sample, its lot information, the analytical methods used, and the results reported by the laboratory.

Start With the Sample Identity

Confirm that the material name, reported lot number, and expected amount on the COA match the product and batch you are reviewing. A COA only applies to the specific sample identified in that report.

Read the Method and Result Together

A result has meaning only in the context of the method used. For example, chromatographic purity results should identify the analytical method, while endotoxin results should state the tested method and reporting limit.

  • Identity: confirms the tested material is consistent with the expected analyte.
  • Purity: reports the relative composition measured by the stated analytical method.
  • Content or mass: reports the amount measured in the tested vial or sample.
  • Endotoxin: reports the conditions and limits used for the applicable test.
